Day 1: Istanbul – The Capital of Jewish Heritage

Upon our morning arrival in Istanbul, we embark on a journey to uncover its Jewish heritage. Balat (The Jewish Quarter), a historic neighborhood in Istanbul, was once a hub for the Jewish community during the Ottoman era. Its narrow streets, historic houses, and synagogues reflect the influences of both Ottoman and Jewish cultures. During our visit, we will learn about the Jewish quarters and their significance.
Highlights: Ahrida Synagogue: One of the oldest synagogues in Istanbul, built by Jewish immigrants from Spain in the 15th century. It is a significant symbol of Jewish culture in Turkey. Jewish Museum of Balat: This museum provides deep insights into the history, culture, and art of the Jewish community, showcasing the vibrant Jewish life in the area during the Ottoman period. Neve Shalom Synagogue is one of the most important synagogues for Turkish Jewry, renowned for its architecture and history. The Ashkenazi Synagogue, another notable landmark, reflects the lives of Ashkenazi Jews in Istanbul.
Day 2: Edirne – Traces of the Jewish Community
Edirne, a former capital of the Ottoman Empire, has been home to various cultures. Its Jewish community held a significant place in history, making Edirne one of the starting points of Jewish heritage in Turkey. The Grand Synagogue of Edirne is the largest synagogue in Turkey and a prominent symbol of Jewish heritage. Built in 1907, it stands out with its impressive architecture and historical significance. During our visit, we will learn about the Jewish community during the Ottoman era and explore the synagogue’s intricate design.
The Jewish Cemetery in Edirne is one of the oldest in Turkey. Here, we will see the tombstones of Jewish families who lived in the region for centuries, offering a glimpse into the deep roots of Jewish culture in the area.
Day 3: Izmir – The Mediterranean Capital of Jewish Culture
Izmir has been a vital settlement for Jewish communities in the Mediterranean. During the Ottoman era, Izmir’s Jewish population played an essential role in the city’s culture and commerce, and a significant Jewish community still thrives there today. Located in the Kemeraltı Bazaar area, the Rabbi’s Synagogue serves as a spiritual center for the Jewish community in Izmir. We will learn about Jewish rituals and the history of Izmir’s Jewish population during our visit. Beth Israel Synagogue is one of Izmir’s oldest and most important synagogues, serving as a primary place of worship for the Jewish community. Exploring its interior, we will gain insights into the Jewish faith and the cultural heritage of Izmir’s Jews.
