Kariye Mosque

Our tour begins at Kariye Mosque, one of Istanbul’s most impressive Byzantine structures. Originally built in the 4th century, this building showcases some of the finest examples of Byzantine mosaic and fresco art. Kariye Mosque is famous for its stunning mosaics and frescoes depicting scenes from the Bible. Particularly noteworthy are the Nativity of Mary, the miracles of Christ, and the Last Judgment scenes, considered some of the highest achievements of Christian art. Converted into a mosque in the 16th century, the building also features Ottoman additions. Today, this structure captivates visitors as a masterpiece where both Christian and Islamic cultures converge.

The Walls of Istanbul

Next, we embark on a journey along the Walls of Istanbul, one of the most important defensive structures from the Byzantine period. Built in the 5th century, these walls demonstrate how the Byzantine Empire protected Istanbul. These walls served as the last line of defense against the Ottoman armies during the conquest of Istanbul. Despite their damage, the walls still stand tall and are the source of legends about Istanbul’s invincibility. During the tour, we will explore the gates, bastions, and towers of the walls, following the traces of history.

Fener District

Greek Orthodox Heritage.Our next stop is the Fener district, located along the Golden Horn, and the heart of Greek Orthodox culture. In this area, we will visit historical buildings from both the Byzantine and Ottoman periods.Fener Greek Patriarchate: One of the important centers of the Christian world, the Patriarchate is the seat of the Patriarch, considered the spiritual leader of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Church of St. Mary of the Mongols (Bloody Church): The only church in Istanbul that was not converted into a mosque after the conquest.

Balat District

Traces of Jewish and Ottoman Culture. Balat was known as the center of the Jewish community during the Ottoman period and is famous for its colorful houses. While following the traces of Jewish culture, we will also observe the richness of Ottoman architecture. Ahrida Synagogue: This synagogue, dating back to the 15th century, was a center of Jewish life during the Ottoman period. Its architectural structure and historical significance are remarkable. Colorful Balat Houses: These houses, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, are among the most beautiful examples of the cultural and architectural heritage passed down from the Ottoman era. They are a great stop for those who enjoy photography.

Old Greek and Jewish Neighborhoods

In the final part of our tour, we will walk through the narrow streets of Fener and Balat to explore the old Greek and Jewish neighborhoods. Here, you will witness Istanbul’s multicultural structure through cobblestone streets, old shops, and street culture. The small churches, synagogues, and mosques in the area showcase how different religions and cultures have lived together for centuries. You will also have the opportunity to relax in local cafes and experience Turkish coffee and traditional sweets.
